Antlers have fascinated John since childhood. Their unique shapes, colourations, tactileness, density and the fact that they are shed annually makes them an ideal medium for rendering very detailed carved images as well as pen and ink drawings.
Many times the natural shape of an antler provides John with the idea as to what the image to be carved or drawn should be. The preparation of an antler to receive ink as well as the carving process itself creates a great deal of dust and noise. This necessitates John's studio to always be outdoors and at the end of a long extension cord.
