Pottery

I prefer to create pottery with a contemporary look and feel and
mainly use underglazes to decorate my work. I enjoy the various effects
that these give me as they can be used in many different applications. A
painterly fashion, transfers, layering, colour washes and sgraffito to
name but a few. Colour is very important to me and this is evident
in my work.  As my style has developed over time, I have experimented
with different types of clay but I always come back to using white clay
as a blank canvas for colours.

I get excited by the endless possibilities of a lump of clay holds. It is
something that I never tire of and am continually challenged by.
I especially like to create one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces; clocks, lamps,
yarns bowls with a personality! I really enjoy taking commissions as they
challenge my skills. Having fun with pottery is important to me and
I hope this shows through in my work and the lessons that I teach in
my studio.

I am cognisant of leaving as small a carbon footprint on our world as
possible and have experimented with single firing to reduce energy
usage.

Raku is another area of ceramics that I am currently exploring and have
been experimenting with horsehair and feathers which give a beautiful
earthy effect.

Todays total eclipse!
Shame it was cloudy near us but it was still pretty spectacular and eerie 🤩
The birds were chirping loudly then went eerily quiet

Had a play with some agateware this week.
Agateware is clay which has been coloured with stains and is then mixed together with white or other colours. It blends beautifully and gives interesting patterns. It can be more challenging to throw as air bubbles can easily form if the clay is not pushed together properly- whoops! 😆
It’s quite hard to see the colour variations whilst the clay is still wet. Will post a pic of the finished result.

Suitable for intermediate throwers who have taken 2 throwing course in the recent past either with Firing Time or another studio. For this course you should be able to centre clay without too much effort. The focus for this course is on improving skills and technical ablity, not the number of pots you make! You will be encouraged to cut through some of your creations to learn how to improve your technique.
