Pottery

Visit Potter Anne Young at Tom Parson’s woodworking Studio on Loon Call Lake just west of Apsley. This is Anne Second year participating in the Apsley StudioTour.

Anne’s functional high-fired work is easily recognized. Bowls, mugs, wine cups, butter dishes, vases and more have bark like texture on the outside or beautiful leopard and black glaze or carved trees. Other work has colourful high fired glazes in blues and greens with sometimes pinks, purples and off white speckles swirled in just for fun.
Her nonfunctional Horsehair fired Raku work features horse hair, feathers and sugar sprinkles. The pottery pieces are heated in an outdoor kiln to 1,200 F. then removed. Horsehair strands are laid across the hot pot leaving a wandering linear smoke design on the surface. Sugar is sprinkled, leaving spotted smoke marks. Feathers give a dark, feather silhouette. All this has to happen within 1 minute before the pot has cooled.

Anne is also an accomplished painter and photographer, an avid downhill and cross country skier and in the summer loves golfing, fishing, kayaking and gardening at their Water Access cottage on Anstruther Lake.

“I’ve always loved working with my hands! The life of an artist is not for everyone, but definitely has been magical for me.”
