Mosaics

Anja loves broken china, left over tile and bits of stained glass as they become the ingredients for her colourful, whimsical mosaics! Tiny bird shaped beads or flower buttons, ceramic cats or typewriter keys add intricate details to her cottage or country scenes. Creating a mosaic of her client’s home, cottage or other special place is Anja’s favourite project! With a background in interior design, she loves homes of all shapes and sizes. 

Anja has been working in this captivating medium for over 20 years, which means that she has amassed a huge mountain of broken china and pottery. Due to her German background this is well organized by colour and pattern in her bright and cheery studio so she can always find that perfect shard.  Her work brings her much pleasure and joy and she hopes this is passed on to whoever receives one of her special creations.

This is my mom’s house, with a focus on her front porch, our favourite spot to sit and chat, hidden by the railing and cooled by the luscious maple. Can you see our three little heads? There is china from my grandmothers, my mom, my sister and my mom’s late best friend making up her beautiful flowers. The piece of china with the birdcage ( left over from one of my commissions) perfectly matches a piece of art she has hanging on her wall and also is an ode to Mango, her parrot. The progress on this piece was slow, not just because making a personal piece of art has to fit around my commissions and classes but also because I feel more pressure to make it just right. Does the garden look right? Is this colour working for the brick? I kept second guessing myself.
