Pottery
I prefer to create pottery with a contemporary look and feel and
mainly use underglazes to decorate my work. I enjoy the various effects
that these give me as they can be used in many different applications. A
painterly fashion, transfers, layering, colour washes and sgraffito to
name but a few. Colour is very important to me and this is evident
in my work. As my style has developed over time, I have experimented
with different types of clay but I always come back to using white clay
as a blank canvas for colours.
I get excited by the endless possibilities of a lump of clay holds. It is
something that I never tire of and am continually challenged by.
I especially like to create one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces; clocks, lamps,
yarns bowls with a personality! I really enjoy taking commissions as they
challenge my skills. Having fun with pottery is important to me and
I hope this shows through in my work and the lessons that I teach in
my studio.
I am cognisant of leaving as small a carbon footprint on our world as
possible and have experimented with single firing to reduce energy
usage.
Raku is another area of ceramics that I am currently exploring and have
been experimenting with horsehair and feathers which give a beautiful
earthy effect.
